The Lego Movie

Without exaggeration The Lego Movie is the best fantasy film since Lord of the Rings and Star Wars combined. Now that I have your attention allow me to backpedal. The Lego Movie is funny, fast paced, and leaves you humming the “Everything is Awesome” song all the way home. The Lego universe is filled with amazing animation that will delight young and old. Kids like it, and adults like it more.

Emmet is just an ordinary Joe trying to make his mark in the fast-paced world of Lego construction. He lives his life according to the rules and desperately tries to fit in. His world falls apart when he meets the beguiling Wyldestyle, and she involves him in a conspiracy to stop evil President Business. Unfortunately for him, the underground resistance now believes he is the MasterBuilder in fulfillment of an ancient prophesy.

If it sounds silly that’s because it is, but that doesn’t mean the subtle theme of setting right-brained creative types against the left-brained control freaks won’t find its mark. The Lego Movie suggests there are two kinds of people: the build-it-using-the-instructions types, and the make-it-up-as-you-go-along types. I think the truth is simpler still; there are those who will like this movie, and those who will love it.

Rated PG for mild action and rude humor. [rating=4]
